Illinoisans Get an Extra Month to Renew Expired Licenses and Registrations

As hours-long waits continue to be the norm at DMV facilities across the state, the Governor has tacked another month onto the grace period during which expired items are still valid.

Illinoisans now have until November 1, 2020 to renew expired driver’s licenses, ID card, and license plate stickers.

As a reminder, many services offered by the DMV, including vehicle sticker renewals, are available online at, and a pre-registration is available for those who will be renewing driver’s licenses. Pre-registration will improve transaction times at the DMV.

Through July 31, DMV facilities are only serving new drivers, customers with expired driver’s licenses, ID cards, and vehicle transactions. Social distancing and face masks are required.
